André Jorge, founder of Vale da Palha is a highly regarded breeder, one of the few who selects his pairings based on temperament and health, working towards the preservation of the Cão de Fila de São Miguel and its singular characteristics.
Location: District of Leiria – Portugal
First Fila de São Miguel Breeding: 1990’s (with registry 1997)
Jorge became fascinated by the breed during the late 1980s after his father took him to the Lisbon Zoo, where a male and female Cão de Fila de São Miguel were kept. The unusual look of the dogs drew André’s interest, and soon after he decided to keep one. The interest grew through his close contact with the dogs and their unique temperament, and still persists to this day.
When asked what differences there are between the Cão de Fila de São Miguel and the many herding breeds that he’s encountered, André replied: “The Fila is more willing to do get involved in riskier maneuvers, he is more rustic in nature, fast and versatile. At the same time he is stronger and more durable than most shepherd breeds.”
